  7. TELEPHONE HOTLINES.  The SBA and several other government
  8. agencies maintain toll-free telephone "hotline" information
  9. services to assist businesses and taxpayers.  Some of the
  10. more important ones to know about are the following:

  12.     . SBA Answer Desk: 1-800/827-5722 (or 1-800-UASK-SBA)

  14.       This is the toll-free number of a new small business
  15.       information and referral service offered by the SBA,
  16.       which you can call from anywhere in the continental
  17.       United States, except Washington, D.C.  In the
  18.       District of Columbia, call 653-7561.

  20.       This answer desk is a system providing voice mail
  21.       messages on a wide variety of small business subjects.

  23.     . SBA On-Line:  The SBA has set up its first electronic
  24.       bulletin board system, called SBA On-Line, to help
  25.       distribute information about its services and publi-
  26.       cations.  There is no charge for this service.  You
  27.       can browse through various files remotely or download
  28.       them, for free, to your computer.  Even the phone
  29.       lines for this BBS are toll-free.  To log on, dial:

  33.     . Small Business Hotline: 1-800/424-5201

  35.       This toll-free line is a specialized free service
  36.       offered by the Export-Import Bank to small exporters
  37.       needing general information or problem-solving assis-
  38.       tance relating to doing business abroad.  It provides
  39.       information on export credit and on assistance avail-
  40.       able from other government agencies and the private
  41.       sector.

  43.     . Interagency Trade Information Center:  1-800/USA-TRADE

  45.       (For general information on exporting, provided by
  46.       various U.S. government agencies.)  Or, for informa-
  47.       tion on doing business in the "unified" European
  48.       Market after 1992, call for written information and
  49.       a quarterly newsletter, from the Department of
  50.       Commerce's Single Internal Market:  1992 Information
  51.       Service, at 1-202/377-5276.  Or call the European
  52.       Community Center's Washington, D.C. office, at
  53.       1-202/862-9500.

  55.       NOTE:  For information on taxes and other aspects of
  56.       doing business in various foreign countries, the ac-
  57.       counting firm of Ernst & Young publishes a series of
  58.       booklets for each of a large number of countries.

  68.       Like certain Scandinavian countries, the Environmen-
  69.       tal Protection Agency now has a "Small Business
  70.       Ombudsman" to give easier access to the EPA, help
  71.       you comply with EPA regulations, and make sure you
  72.       are fairly treated in any disputes with the EPA.

  77.       Use this number (1-800/829-3676) to obtain IRS tax
  78.       forms, publications, etc.  The IRS also puts on free

  88.       If you want to find out what records the Social
  89.       Security Administration (SSA) has of your earnings
  90.       and your projected benefits at retirement age, you
  91.       can file a simple form requesting a detailed print-
  92.       out of this information (and hopefully find they
  93.       haven't lost your files).  This is something every-
  94.       one should do once every few years, since, if the
  95.       SSA has made a serious mistake in your earnings
  96.       record, you have only a limited number of years in
  97.       which you can contact them and have your record
  98.       corrected.
